WHAT WOULD THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE IF WE PREPARED OUR YOUTH WITH SKILLS FOR LIFE?

Give your students the skills necessary to ultimately better prepare themselves to take on the challenges that life
throws at them.

One of the many bonuses of working with horses vs a classroom setting is the component of interactivity because we all learn differently, but we can all take away lessons that we learn through our experiences. As the only Nationally Recognized Equine Assisted Learning Program in Canada, each of our exercises are custom designed to maximise learning potential and focus on developing individual skills as they work through each fun interactive group challenge. Teams will work to;

  • develop relationships

  • accept responsibility and accountability

  • overcome barriers to find change

  • be encouraged to be creative and innovative

  • find opportunity in working together

  • realize the benefits associated with effective communication

  • and recognize the value of mutual trust, respect, and personal integrity...All while having a blast!

Equine Assisted Learning acts as an important educational tool to help to develop empathy and kindness as well as combat;

  • Behavioural disorders

  • Low self esteem

  • Bullying

  • Drug abuse

  • Emotional issues

  • Poor communication skills

  • Inability to work with others

AN EXAMPLE OF TRUE CHANGE

A little girl from one of our 12 week curriculums stands up on her last day to choose and explain her word from the achievement board.  This little girl has FAS, has been bullied or ignored by her peers and when she started the program was afraid to speak up or express herself.  On their last day, she picks 8 words, instead of one and explained each word and why she picked it.  As if that wasn’t amazing enough, her peers, who once bullied and ignored her, began to clap at her accomplishment.  What an amazing moment!

What is Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)?

To put it simply, Equine Assisted Learning is a learner based educational experience with horses. More specifically, EAL is an effective approach to human development that encourages individual and team growth. Participants engage in objectively driven exercises and find themselves learning valuable life skills in a fun and exciting atmosphere while working with horses. EAL

has proven to be effective, powerful, positive, educational, and creative.

The Academy of Equine Assisted Learning’s program emphasizes it’s building-block curriculum of facilitating life skills through positively reinforced interaction with horses. Exercises are developed to encourage self confidence through validated, hands-on experiences. Current research has found this experiential form of learning to be most effective.

Why Horses? Horses are tough and stead fast dance partners. Horses consistently react to stimulus provided

by participants. Some of the joys associated with working around horses are – they don’t judge but they constantly assess. Their feedback is honest and instant. Learning to listen to what horses have to say is powerful and can sometimes spur the answer to individual change. By including horses in specially designed educational exercises, equine-assisted facilitators have greatly

multiplied the participant’s rate of success to self discovery.

How?

Horses can magnify an individual’s problem immediately and provide a skilled facilitator with an opportunity to identify an individual’s character. Horses don’t over think a participant’s motive but horses do challenge their behaviour and leadership.

"The horses that I worked with taught me leadership, problem solving, patience, flexibility, and to focus on the problem I'm working on."

"I learnt from the horses that I should be a good leader and the horses could be included."

"I felt really safe and I was really excited to do the next course."

"My horse taught me to have patience and how to problem solve."

"What I witnessed when I accompanied one of the students group, was something extraordinary. The transformation of fear, hesitation, into trust and an overwhelming sense of love and peace is what I witnessed with these young students. It’s truly a memorable moment to see how well the leaders Kari and Carolyn can tap into that very disruptive spirit and walk them through this program with such ease. The students, some of whom are constantly in my office, came in with a real nonchalant attitude, an attitude of why am I here, left with such a sense of peace that you could feel. They were calm on the way back to the school, and discussed with me everything they felt or overcame with their particular horse. It is truly incredible to watch just how much of an impact these horses and coaches had on our students that day."

"I have noticed more confidence in the kids. They've been more communicative and outgoing. They have shown better teamwork and are more assertive. The staff is very enthusiastic, knowledgable, friendly and kid-centered."

Lois - Teacher
